AS THE KITCHEN door closed behind them, Rhiannon continued to cast her eyes in the direction of where they’d recently left Angela and Jen.

“Skilled as you are, you can’t see through walls. You do know that, right?” Elly tugged her across to where an assortment of food dominated a white marble kitchen island.

She pulled her hand free of Elly’s grip. “Of course, I do. But maybe I should go with them.”

Elly washed and dried her hands and reached into a cupboard, pulling out an assortment of plates. “If I recall you’re a leader in the fields of negotiation and mediation, aren’t you?”

Rhiannon fought to contain her impatience. “Yes. But what’s that got to do with anything?”

Elly fanned the plates on the island and began to apportion food between them. She motioned to the food. “Help me with this, won’t you? Isn’t part of doing either of those jobs about being good at reading non-verbal cues and body language?”

Rhiannon washed her hands and again joined Elly at the island. “Of course, it is.” She separated slices of prosciutto and placed them on one of the plates.

“In which case I thought you’d have picked up on the fact Jen wanted to speak with Angela.”

Rhiannon dropped the smoked beef she’d been holding. “I don’t think Angela’s ready for that.”

Elly’s gentle grip on her forearm halted her attempt to go after Angela. “Hey, calm down. I know you’ve only just met Jen. But do you think for a minute she would say anything which would make Angela uncomfortable?”

Rhiannon hung her head, suddenly embarrassed at her visceral reaction to protect Angela. “I don’t,” she said quietly.

“Jen is incredibly intuitive, which is a good thing in this relationship. Because sometimes I’m about as thick as two short planks when it comes to discerning what others are thinking. And she obviously picked up on something about Angela. Don’t worry, it won’t be the Spanish inquisition.”

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to react the way I did.”

Jen reached into a drawer and pulled out a set of multi-coloured cheese knives. “Don’t worry about it. I also think time with Jen might allow Angela to ask any questions of her own, without you hovering around like a worry wart.”

Rhiannon picked up the beef she had previously dropped. “I know. It’s just everything between us is still in its early stages at the moment.”

“How is everything between the two of you?”

Rhiannon shrugged. “It’s going okay…I think. Last night’s recital seemed to go well. But I think she’s still very skittish about how she should react in public.” Rhiannon rolled the beef slices and placed them next to the prosciutto. “I mean, it’s not like we were in each other’s pockets or anything at the recital. It’s all very new to her, even if how we feel for each other isn’t.”

Elly pulled a wad of paper napkins from the cupboard and placed them on the tray. “I gather you’re not used to having to maintain such a distance in public.”

“No. I mean I’ve never ever been overly demonstrative when I’m out anywhere.
